Get Up to 11% Back on Your China Shopping:
The 2026 Departure Tax Refund Guide

Foreign visitors can claim back VAT on purchases made in China — up to 11% of what you paid. Most travelers either don't know this or lose their refund on a technicality. This guide walks you through every step, with rules checked against official Chinese government sources.

The short version: Shop at stores with a "Tax Free" sign, spend ¥200+ in one store in one day, ask for a refund application form + invoice at the counter, keep everything unused, and claim your cash at the airport before departure. You get 11% back (8% for some goods like food & books). That's ¥110 back on every ¥1,000 you spend.

The 3-Step Process

1

At the store: buy AND collect your papers

Look for the "Tax Free" sticker (退税商店). After paying, ask for the departure tax refund application form (退税申请单) and the invoice (发票) — the store issues both on the spot. Show your passport when paying.

💡 Pro move — "Buy Now, Refund Now" (即买即退): many stores in major cities now hand you the refund immediately in cash at the counter (they hold a credit-card pre-authorization as security). You settle it at the airport. Ask: "Can I do 'Ji Mai Ji Tui'?"

2

At the airport: customs check BEFORE check-in

At departure, take your items + refund forms + invoices + passport to the customs verification point (海关验核) — usually in the departure hall before you check in luggage, because customs may want to see the actual goods. They stamp your forms.

✈️ Since July 1, 2026, the process is fully paperless-capable: electronic refund forms and e-invoices are accepted, and some declarations don't even need a physical customs check.

3

After security: collect your money

Inside the restricted area, find the tax refund counter (退税代理机构). Show passport + stamped forms + invoices. Choose cash (RMB, up to ¥20,000) or bank transfer. Done — money in pocket in minutes.

¥1,000¥110
¥3,000¥330

Do You Qualify? The 5-Point Checklist

  • You've stayed in China ≤ 183 days (basically: any tourist)
  • You spent ¥200+ in ONE store on ONE day (lowered from ¥500 in April 2025 — much easier now)
  • Items are unused and unopened — don't tear the packaging before flying!
  • You depart within 90 days of purchase, carrying the items yourself (checked luggage counts)
  • NOT refundable: consumables you've used, services, prohibited/restricted export items, and goods from stores without the Tax Free sign

5 Mistakes That Get Refunds Rejected

1. Wearing or opening your purchase. That new sneakers box stays sealed until you're through customs. Wear your old shoes to the airport.

2. Losing the invoice. The refund form alone isn't enough — the VAT invoice (发票) is mandatory. Photograph everything as backup.

3. Checking in luggage before customs. If your goods are in the checked suitcase and customs wants to inspect them, you're stuck. Do customs verification first.

4. Assuming every store qualifies. No "Tax Free" sign = no refund, no exceptions. Budget chain stores and street stalls usually don't qualify; department stores and brand flagships usually do.

5. Mixing purchases across stores on one day. The ¥200 threshold is per-store per-day. ¥150 + ¥150 at two different stores = ¥0 refund.

Heads-up on timing: you have 90 days from the date of purchase to leave China and claim your refund — this applies to the instant "Buy Now, Refund Now" service as well, including cross-province departures (buy in one province, fly out of another — available across Hunan, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan since July 2026). Confirmed by the 12366 State Taxation hotline on Oct 28, 2026.

Find Tax-Free Stores & Official Info

The Ministry of Commerce runs the official nationwide platform — store lookup, instant-refund locations, multilingual guides:

Rule of thumb on the ground: look for the "TAX FREE / 退税商店" sticker at the entrance or cashier. Big department stores (SKP, IAPM, Yanlord, Joy City etc.), brand flagships and tea/gift shops in tourist areas are your best bets.

Why 2026 Is the Best Year Ever to Shop in China

Tax-free shopping applications by foreign visitors grew +366% in the first half of 2026 (Shanghai customs alone processed 253,000 refund claims, ~3× more than last year). The "2.0" refund policy cut the threshold from ¥500 to ¥200, added thousands of qualifying stores, and made the whole flow paperless from July 2026. Meanwhile visa-free entry now covers dozens of countries (240-hour transit policy for 57 nationalities) — "buy a suitcase, fill it, get 11% back" has become a real travel trend.

How This Guide Is Built

Every number and rule on this page is checked against official Chinese government sources (State Taxation Administration, Customs, Ministry of Commerce) — not copied from other blogs. Facts that change often (thresholds, store lists, deadlines) are re-verified monthly and stamped with the date above. Where a rule is easy to misread, we say so explicitly. If you spot an error, it gets fixed within days, not months.
