Xiamen

Island lanes, colonial villas and China's cleanest beach city

✓ 6 must-see sights📅 2–3 days✓ Verified Nov 1, 2026

Xiamen is the easy-going opposite of the megacities: an island city of banyan shade, tea shops and colonial arcades, with the car-free UNESCO island of Gulangyu a five-minute ferry away. It is China's favourite domestic romantic escape, and it works just as well for a first international visit.

A working itinerary

  • Day 1 — Gulangyu all day: Sunlight Rock early, gardens and lanes after, stay for the quiet evening.
  • Day 2 — Nanputuo temple morning, university area and Shapowei afternoon, Zhongshan Road night market.
  • Day 3 — Bike the ring road, or a full-day tulou trip.

When to go

PeriodWhat to expect
Oct – DecDry, warm, clear — the island at its best.
Apr – MayWarm and green before the rains.
Jun – SepHot, humid, typhoon-watch season; sea is warmest.
Jan – FebMild (10–18°C), quietest crowds.

Getting there & away

Gaoqi (XMN) airport is on the island's edge — 15 min to downtown. High-speed rail from Shenzhen 3 h, Shanghai 5.5 h. The metro's line 1 'sea-crossing' section is a sight itself.

What to eat

  • Shacha noodles — Satay-broth noodles with your pick of toppings.
  • Oyster omelette — With a sour chilli dip, night-market style.
  • Tusun dong — Sea-slug jelly — the local dare; try it once.

Watch out for

  • Gulangyu ferry slots are passport-named — book the correct pier (Dongdu cruise terminal for tourists) and time.
  • Island 'free tea ceremony' invitations end in hard-sell tins; politely decline.
  • Xiamen University is closed to walk-ins — reservations open periodically and fill instantly; do not build the day around it.
  • Summer typhoons close ferries without much notice; have a mainland-day backup plan.
