NORTHEAST WINTER SPECIAL

Changchun 2027 & the Northeast winter

The Winter Universiade (Jan 15–25, 2027) is the perfect excuse: rime-ice mornings, Olympic-grade ski resorts, Harbin's neon ice city and the best cold-weather food in China.

North-east China — Dongbei — is about to host the world's biggest winter student sports event, and the region's ice-and-snow season is the best-value winter travel in China: record snow, Harbin-scale ice festivals, hot springs beside frozen volcanoes and the heaviest, warmest food culture on the map. This column is your shortcut: the Games first, then the cities, sights and food worth building a trip around.

Changchun 2027: the Winter Universiade at a glance

The 33rd FISU World University Winter Games runs 15–25 January 2027 across two cities in Jilin Province — Changchun, the provincial capital, and Jilin City 100 km east. Organisers expect 3,716 athletes and officials from 63 countries and regions, the largest entry in Universiade history, across 12 sports and 97 events. The motto translates roughly as "Dream of ice and snow, everlasting youth."

  • Two compact host zones. Changchun stages the ice sports — speed skating, short track, figure skating, curling, ice hockey — plus cross-country skiing, freestyle aerials, ski orienteering and winter cross-country running.
  • Snow sports at two famous resorts. Beidahu hosts alpine skiing, big air, halfpipe and slopestyle; Songhua Lake (Songhua Lake Resort) hosts snowboard parallel events and ski mountaineering.
  • 14 competition days. Curling mixed doubles opens on 12 January; short track, cross-country and curling finals run on closing day, 25 January. Marquee finals are scheduled on weekends to make spectator trips easier.
  • No white elephants. All 13 venues already existed — organisers refurbished rather than built, and every one opens to the public after the Games.

Practical pointWhat we know
TicketsNot on sale yet at the time of writing. The Organising Committee has said spectator services are part of the plan — buy only through official Universiade channels when sales open, and treat resellers as scams.
Base yourselfChangchun for ice sports; Jilin City for Beidahu and Songhua Lake. The two are 30–40 min apart by high-speed rail or intercity train.
Getting inChangchun Longjia International Airport (CGQ) has the main links — and unusually, a high-speed rail station inside the terminal with direct trains to both Changchun (13 min) and Jilin City (25 min).
Weather realityJanuary in Jilin runs −10 to −25 °C. Outdoor events (cross-country, alpine) mean hours in the cold: full winter kit, hand warmers, spare phone batteries.
VisaCitizens of ~50 countries enter visa-free for up to 30 days under the current unilateral/mutual policies (see the home-page checker); the 240-hour transit-free rule also applies at Changchun airport. Confirm on the National Immigration Administration site.

Changchun — the host city

A movie-city turned motor city with a soft spot for snow. Changchun is flat, cheap, easy to get around, and packed with 20th-century history you can walk through in an afternoon — plus one of Asia's most unusual city trams still running through the streets.

Puppet Manchukuo Palace Museum

伪满皇宫博物院

The palace where Puyi — the last emperor of China — was installed as puppet ruler of Japanese-occupied Manchukuo. Genuinely one of the most atmospheric 20th-century museums in China, and sobering with it.

Time needed2–3 h
Ticket~¥70 — confirm on the official museum site

Tip — the audio guide is worth it; the story is heavy and the context makes the rooms land.

Jingyuetan National Forest Park

净月潭

A vast forest-and-lake park on the city's edge that becomes a cross-country ski world every January — it hosts the annual Vasaloppet China ski marathon, and its trails feed directly into the Universiade snow-sport atmosphere.

Time neededHalf day
Ticket~¥30 + activity fees

Tip — rent skis or just walk the frozen lakeshore; light rail line 3 gets you there.

Changchun Film Studio Museum & the 54-route tram

长影旧址博物馆 · 54路有轨电车

Changchun was the cradle of Chinese cinema; the old studio museum preserves sets, props and projector halls. Pair it with the vintage green tram (route 54) that still rattles through snowy streets — it is the city's postcard.

Time needed2 h
TicketMuseum ~¥90 — confirm locally · tram ¥1–2

Tip — ride the tram at dusk with snow falling; it is the single most Changchun thing you can do.

Zhe-yo-shan ("This Mountain") & Guilin Road night market

这有山 · 桂林路

An indoor hill-village mall carved with lantern-lit paths — absurd, fun, and warm at −20 °C — plus the night market street where Changchun actually eats.

Time neededEvening
TicketBoth free to enter

Tip — Guilin Road's grilled cold noodles (kao lengmian) are the local currency of happiness.

Jilin City — rime ice and the snow resorts

Wusong (rime ice) Island

雾凇岛

On cold still nights the Songhua River's mist freezes onto every branch, and by sunrise the trees wear full white crystal coats — one of China's four natural wonders. Season runs late December to late February, best at dawn after a windless −20 °C night.

Time neededSunrise trip (half day)
Ticket~¥60 — confirm seasonally

Tip — rime is weather-lottery: ask your hotel the night before which villages reported mist. Han Tun and Zengtong villages are the classic viewpoints.

Beidahu Ski Resort — Universiade alpine venue

北大湖滑雪场

One of China's best natural-snow resorts and the Universiade's alpine, big-air, halfpipe and slopestyle venue. 40+ runs, serious vertical, and much quieter than Japanese mega-resorts.

Time needed1–3 days
TicketDay passes roughly ¥300–600 in season — book resort official channels

Tip — shuttle buses run from Jilin City in ~70 min; gear rental on site is complete and decent.

Songhua Lake Resort — Universiade snowboard venue

松花湖滑雪场

The resort above the frozen Songhua river valley hosting snowboard parallel and ski mountaineering. Big modern lift system, night skiing, and it is the closer of the two resorts to the city.

Time needed1–2 days
TicketDay passes roughly ¥300–500 — book resort official channels

Tip — the resort's hotels let you be first on the lifts, which in January means untouched powder.

Beyond the Games: the northeast winter circuit

Harbin — the ice festival capital

哈尔滨

Three hours north of Changchun by high-speed rail: the Ice and Snow World's full-size neon ice city, Russian squares and the frozen Songhua carnival. Our full Harbin guide covers tickets and timing.

Time needed2–3 days
TicketIce & Snow World ~¥328, date-based

Tip — pair Games days in Changchun with a Harbin weekend; the HSR trains are frequent and cheap.

Changbai Mountain — the volcano lake

长白山

China's deepest lake sits in a volcanic crater at 2,190 m, ringed by sixteen peaks — partly frozen and steaming in winter. The north slope adds waterfalls, hot springs and the 'Magic World' misty forest on the way down.

Time needed2 days from Changchun
Ticket~¥105 + shuttle ~¥85 (north slope) — confirm seasonally

Tip — the crater rim closes in high wind without warning; build a spare morning. Jinjiang or Erdaobaihe are the practical bases.

Shenyang — imperial winter

沈阳

The early Qing palace (¥50, Unesco-listed) is a smaller, calmer cousin of Beijing's Forbidden City, and the city's street-food scene — grilled chicken skeletons included — is a national legend. Two hours from Changchun by rail.

Time needed1–2 days
TicketShenyang Imperial Palace ¥50

Tip — winter is the right season for Shenyang's steaming jiaozi houses and the Liaoning Museum (free, reserve).

Snow Village (Xuexiang)

雪乡

The fairy-tale logging village where snow stacks meters deep on wooden roofs — famous, busy, and genuinely beautiful if you pick a weekday.

Time needed1 night
Ticket~¥120 + park shuttle

Tip — book heated-kang guesthouses well ahead; prices peak on weekends and around the Games.

Dongbei food: the winter survival cuisine

Northeast food is built for −25 °C: big, hot, pickled and deeply satisfying. Do not leave without these:

  • Guobaorou 锅包肉 — crispy sweet-and-sour pork, invented in Harbin, perfected everywhere. The benchmark of a good Dongbei restaurant.
  • Tieguodun 铁锅炖 — everything stewed in a giant iron pot over wood fire, cornbread pasted on the pot's rim. A social event as much as a meal.
  • Shazhucai 杀猪菜 — sauerkraut, pork and blood-sausage stew, the winter harvest classic.
  • Dongbei BBQ 东北烧烤 — charcoal grills with regional obsessions (Jilin's grilled fish, Jinzhou's everything) and outside tables even in winter.
  • Korean cold noodles 延吉冷面 — yes, iced noodles in January; the Dongbei way, especially in Yanbian-influenced Changchun and Jilin City.
  • Frozen everything 冻梨冻柿子 — frozen pears and persimmons thawed in cold water, street-sold from carts. Dessert, Dongbei-style.

A working Games-plus-travel plan

  • Day 1–2 — Changchun: ice-sports finals, Puppet Palace, film studio, night market. Sleep low, acclimatise to the cold.
  • Day 3 — Jilin City: sunrise rime on the Songhua, afternoon at Songhua Lake watching the parallel snowboard course.
  • Day 4–5 — Beidahu or ski days: alpine events or your own turns; evening hotpot to recover.
  • Day 6–7 — Harbin: Ice and Snow World at night, Central Street, tiger park or Sun Island by day. Fly out from Harbin or rail back to Changchun.
  • +2 days — Changbai Mountain if the crater weather window cooperates.

Cold-weather survival (from people who live here)

  • Layers beat heroics. Thermal base, fleece, windproof shell, wool socks, real boots with grip — January pavement is ice. Cheap ice-cleats (¥20, any pharmacy) are the best purchase of the trip.
  • Phones die in the cold. At −20 °C a battery drops fast: keep it in an inside pocket, carry a power bank, and photograph tickets before going outdoors.
  • Book winter early in Games season. Hotels near venues will surge around 12–25 January — reserve refundable rooms as soon as your dates are fixed.
  • Indoor-outdoor swings. Heating indoors is 25 °C+, outdoors −20 °C: dress in layers you can shed fast, and expect to check coats at malls and restaurants.
  • Trains beat roads in blizzards. The high-speed network (Beijing–Changchun ~4.5 h, Harbin ~3 h from Changchun) keeps running when highways close.

Keep planning

The full city system applies to the northeast too — visa rules, payment setup and packing lists all carry over.
