Dunhuang

Cave art, crescent oases and the silk road's great crossroads

✓ 6 must-see sights📅 2 days✓ Verified Nov 1, 2026

For a thousand years every caravan between China and the West stopped here. Dunhuang's reward is the Mogao Caves — a thousand years of Buddhist wall painting in the desert — plus singing dunes, a crescent-shaped spring, and the clearest night sky you will see in China.

Mogao Caves

莫高窟

735 caves, 45,000 m² of murals and 2,400 painted sculptures spanning 1,000 years — the Louvre of the silk road, visited by timed ticket only.

Time neededHalf day
TicketClass-A ticket ¥238 peak: 8 caves + 2 films · emergency ticket ¥100: 4 caves (holidays only).

Tip — Book on the official reservation site or WeChat account '莫高窟参观预约网' well ahead — summer dates sell out weeks early. No photography inside, ever.

Mingsha Dunes & Crescent Spring

鸣沙山 · 月牙泉

Six-hundred-metre dunes you climb barefoot (or by camel) around a spring that has refused to be buried for 2,000 years.

Time neededHalf day
Ticket¥110 · multi-day re-entry sometimes offered — check at the gate.

Tip — Go 17:00 onward: cooler sand, sunset views, and the sand does literally sing under your feet.

Yumen Pass & Han Great Wall

玉门关

The 'Jade Gate' where the Han wall ended and the Western Regions began — square mud-brick forts in emptiness to the horizon.

Time neededHalf day
Ticket¥40.

Tip — Combine with Yadan park as one long day; distances are huge, take water.

Yadan National Geological Park

雅丹魔鬼城

Wind-carved rock fleets across 400 km² of gravel desert — 'the city of the devil', best at golden hour.

Time neededHalf day
Ticket¥80 + shuttle bus inside.

Tip — 3.5 h round trip from town on rough roads; sunset departures are the classic.

Yangguan Pass

阳关

The southern silk road pass — a rebuilt beacon tower, museum and the last view west.

Time needed2 h
Ticket¥50.

Tip — Smaller than Yumen but with the better museum; choose one if the day is tight.

Shazhou night market

沙洲夜市

Dunhuang's evening street: lamb skewers, apricot-pear juice, desert souvenirs and live music.

Time needed1–2 h
TicketFree.

Tip — The apricot (xingpi) water is the local remedy for desert thirst — buy it iced.

A working itinerary

  • Day 1 — Mogao Caves morning slot (book the 08:30–10:00 window), rest at midday, Mingsha dunes from 17:00 to sunset.
  • Day 2 — Yumen Pass + Yadan park full-day loop with sunset in the 'devil city'.

When to go

PeriodWhat to expect
May – JunWarm, dry, before the peak-season crush — the smart window.
Sep – OctPost-summer clarity, grape harvest in town, comfortable heat.
Jul – AugHot (35°C+) and busiest; caves book out furthest ahead.
Nov – MarCold and quiet; some facilities reduce hours, but the dunes in snow are otherworldly.

Getting there & away

Dunhuang Mogao (DNH) airport has flights from Xi'an, Lanzhou, Chengdu and more; Liuyuan South is the high-speed rail stop 1.5 h away. The town is small; taxis are ¥10–30 anywhere.

What to eat

  • Donkey-meat huangmian — The local noodle bowl — do not knock it till you try it.
  • Lamb skewers — Desert-road quality at night-market prices.
  • Apricots & apricot juice — Li Guang apricots in summer, dried and bottled the rest of the year.

Watch out for

  • Mogao tickets: only the official reservation channels count. 'Instant Mogao tickets' from street sellers are fiction.
  • Desert sun is serious — hat, sunscreen, and two litres of water per person on dune days.
  • The emergency ¥100 ticket (4 caves) exists only for peak holidays and sells on the day; plan for the full ticket.
  • Distances here are silk-road scale: 200 km day trips are normal. Fuel up, charge up, bring snacks.
