A working itinerary

  • Day 1 — Terracotta Army in the morning, back in town for the City Wall at golden hour and the Muslim Quarter for dinner.
  • Day 2 — Shaanxi History Museum (book ahead), Big Wild Goose Pagoda, Datang Everbright City at night.
  • Day 3 — Mount Hua by early train, or Hancheng Lake and the Xi'an Beilin Museum if you stay flat.

When to go

PeriodWhat to expect
Apr – MayWarm, dry, blossom — ideal walking weather on the wall.
Sep – OctThe other sweet spot; National Day week (Oct 1–7) is packed.
Jun – AugHot, 35°C+ common; do the pits at opening time.
Nov – MarCold but clear, and the crowd level drops hard — best for photos of the Army.

Getting there & away

Xianyang airport (XIY) with wide international links, or 4.5 h by high-speed rail from Beijing. The Terracotta Army is reached by metro line 9 + bus 602/613, tourist bus 5 (306), or a didi (¥80–100 each way).

What to eat

  • Roujiamo — Chinese-style pulled-pork baguette — the original hamburger.
  • Biangbiang noodles — Belt-wide ribbons of noodle, chilli oil, one character you will never write.
  • Yangrou paomo — Lamb soup you tear flatbread into — a whole ritual in a bowl.

Watch out for

  • Skip the "terracotta factory" stops that unofficial tours insert — they are shops.
  • The Army complex and Lishan Garden are one ticket; ignore anyone claiming the park is separate.
  • Do not queue for the shuttle back with the tour groups — the free shuttle leaves from the same car park and moves faster after 15:00.
  • Book Shaanxi History Museum the day your dates are fixed; it is the hardest free ticket in China after the Forbidden City.
