Chengdu runs at half speed and full flavour. Come for the giant pandas, stay for bamboo-chair teahouses, mahjong on the pavement and a hotpot culture that has its own gravity. It is also the natural gateway to western Sichuan's mountains — and to Jiuzhaigou.

A working itinerary
- Day 1 — Pandas at opening, People's Park teahouse afternoon, Jinli and hotpot at night.
- Day 2 — Dujiangyan + Qingcheng day trip, or Sanxingdui if you prefer museums to mountains.
- Day 3 — Kuanzhai Alleys, Sichuan opera face-changing show, fly out or train on to Chongqing.
When to go
| Period | What to expect |
|---|
| Mar – Jun | Mild and green; pandas are most active in the cool. |
| Sep – Nov | Clear and comfortable — also the best window for Jiuzhaigou in autumn colour. |
| Jul – Aug | Humid and busy, but the teahouses and mountains cool you down. |
| Dec – Feb | Grey, damp, 5–10°C — hotpot season, lowest crowds. |
Getting there & away
Shuangliu (CTU) and Tianfu (TFU) airports. High-speed rail: Chongqing 1.5 h, Xi'an 3.5 h. Jiuzhaigou is 8 h by road or a 40-min flight to Jiuhuang airport.
What to eat
- Hotpot — Order 鸳鸯 yuanyang (split) broth if you fear true spice.
- Mapo tofu — Invented in Chengdu; the humblest restaurants do it best.
- Chuan chuan / bobo chicken — Skewers in chili oil — street version of hotpot.
Watch out for
- Do not buy panda "encounter" packages outside the official base — touching pandas is not offered to tourists at all.
- Panda base tickets are date-specific; a rainy morning still means your ticket is used.
- Sichuan pepper numbs lips — it is not an allergic reaction, and it fades in ten minutes.
- Beware "panda volunteer" offers online; the base has a strict, limited official program only.
