Lhasa sits at 3,650 m with a fortress-palace above every roofline and pilgrims circling the Jokhang day and night. It is the most atmospheric city in China — and the one with a real paperwork rule: foreign visitors need a Tibet Travel Permit arranged through a licensed agency before boarding the train or plane.

Must-see sights
Tickets below are the official standard adult prices at the time of checking. Real-name booking means your passport is the ticket — book under your exact passport name and carry the booklet itself. Prices checked Nov 1, 2026 — operators change them without notice, always confirm on the official site before paying.
Potala Palace
布达拉宫
Thirteen storeys of white and red wall above the city, the winter palace of the Dalai Lamas, and the most recognisable silhouette in Asia.
Time needed2–3 h
TicketRoute 1 ¥200 · Route 2 ¥100 · Snow City annex ¥5. Winter promotion periods often make it free — check the official notice.
Tip — Real-name booking only through the official WeChat mini program, passport option supported. Peak season releases 10 days ahead at 07:00, off-season 7 days. Closed Mondays. Inside photography is banned; your body also needs to be ready for climbing stairs at altitude.
Jokhang Temple
大昭寺
The spiritual centre of Tibet — pilgrims prostrate before its door day and night, and the roof gives the classic Potala view.
Time needed1.5–2 h
Ticket¥85.
Tip — Photography inside is restricted. Walk the Barkhor clockwise with the pilgrims afterwards.
Barkhor Street
八廓街
The ancient circuit around the Jokhang: prayer-wheel stalls, butter lamps, tea houses and rooftop bars with the Potala framed.
Time needed2 h
TicketFree.
Tip — Do one full clockwise lap before you shop anything — the street rewards the ritual.
Sera Monastery debating courtyard
色拉寺

Time neededFull day
TicketEntry ¥120 + vehicle costs; tours from ¥300.
Tip — Only in warm months (May–Oct) and only after 2–3 days acclimatising in Lhasa; the pass is no joke at altitude.

Time needed2–3 h
TicketNorbulingka ¥60 · museum free (reserve).

When to go
| Period | What to expect |
|---|
| May – Jun | Clear, warming, pre-monsoon — the best balance. |
| Sep – Oct | Post-monsoon clarity and festival colour; book Potala early. |
| Jul – Aug | Greenest but rain-shadowed; the season of domestic crowds. |
| Nov – Mar | Cold, thin air, but free-promotion periods and empty courtyards — for the hardy. |
Getting there & away
Fly to Lhasa Gonggar (LXA) from Chengdu/Chongqing/Xi'an/Beijing, or the 36-h scenic train from Beijing/Shanghai (oxygen-enriched carriages). Either way: foreign visitors must have the Tibet Travel Permit and a pre-arranged guide/itinerary through a licensed agency.
What to eat
- Sweet tea house culture — ¥1 a glass, endless refills, whole afternoons.
- Tibetan noodles (thugpa) — Simple, hot, perfect at altitude.
- Yak butter tea — An acquired taste and the local way to fight dryness.
Watch out for
- Foreigners cannot travel independently in Tibet: the permit comes only through a licensed agency with a booked guide and vehicle. Do not book flights first — book the agency first.
- Altitude is the real gatekeeper: land, sleep, walk slowly for 24–48 h before any big day. Skip alcohol on day one.
- The Potala sells out days ahead in season and is closed Mondays; the mini-program needs a Chinese phone number — hotels and agencies handle this routinely.
- Temples ban photography inside; respect it absolutely, fines are enforced.
